Alex will present Discovery Channel’s Life on Mars with Alex James at 20.00hrs on 27th July.Last month Dr Colin Pillinger launched his Beagle 2 landing craft from Kazakhstan as part of the European Space Agency’s Mars Express Mission andLife on Mars with Alex James investigates this extraordinary event, whichhas the potential to change people’s understanding of the solar system.
Dr Colin Pillinger has spent the past thirty-five years analysing extra-terrestrial material on Earth. There is evidence that life may haveonce existed on the red planet but the only way to guarantee the theory isto analyse samples on the surface of Mars itself.
As well as showing Beagle 2′s development over the last few years, Alex interviews Dr. Pillinger on location and the project’s own speciallycommissioned computer graphics demonstrate exactly how the landing andsample analysis will be carried out.
Dr Pillinger had to raise much of the £30 million funding for the Beagle 2spacecraft himself and collected an eclectic group of famous fans along theway, including Blur, Damien Hirst and the Saatchis, who have since beeninvolved in raising awareness and crucial funds for the Mars mission.Damien Hirst has painted part of the Beagle 2 to become the first piece ofartwork to land on Mars and Blur composed the call sign to notify Earthwhen Beagle 2 lands. The short instrumental piece, aptly named, ‘Beagle2′, appeared as a B-side on their 1999 single, ‘No Distance Left to Run’.
